One of the best ways to break into a career in sports is with an internship.Whist it gives individuals a chance to earn practical experience, it also provides the opportunity to network within the industry, as well as players, coaches, administrators on the sports field and arena.

TIPS ON HOW TO BREAK INTO THE SPORTS INDUSTRY

  • HAVE A GAME PLAN – Research the industry, connect the influencers, research sports organisations, governing bodies, agencies, clubs and brands. This will improve your chances of landing an internship.
  • SELL YOURSELF – Good internships have a lot of competition; consider what will make you stand out from the rest.  Highlight their skills and qualifications and the value you would add to the organisation.
  • NETWORK – Sports organizations are no different than other workplaces–it’s usually who you know that gets you in the door. If the student or a family member knows anyone in the business, this is the time to ask for help. They should also attend as many sporting events as possible to make as many connections as possible.
  • WORK HARD – Maintain a high work ethic, do more than what is expected of you; be innovative, industrious and take initiative.
  • STAY FOCUSSED – Deliver, Deliver, Deliver – Remain focussed on the tasks at hand and make sure you follow through.
